Gas Fireplace Will Not Light? Five Things to Check First

Simple, safe checks to try before you book a service call for a gas fireplace that will not turn on.

Gas Fireplace Will Not Light? Five Things to Check First

Few things are more frustrating than a cold fireplace on the first chilly evening of the season. Before you call for service, these quick checks solve a surprising number of no-light problems.

1. Remote and wall switch

Replace the batteries in the remote and the receiver, and make sure any wall switch is on. Weak batteries are the most common cause we see.

2. Gas supply

Check that the gas valve to the fireplace is open and that other gas appliances in the house are working. If you are on propane, check the tank level.

3. Power

Models with electronic ignition may need household power or a backup battery pack. Check the breaker and the battery pack if your unit has one.

4. Give it time after a reset

After a power interruption or a failed start, many systems need a short wait before they will try again. Follow the lighting instructions in your owner manual. Lost it? We can send you a copy from our manuals page.

5. Look, do not force

If you can see the pilot try to light and go out, or the fireplace clicks without lighting, stop there. Do not take apart the valve or controls yourself.

Smell gas? Leave the house right away and call FortisBC or 911 from outside.
